Γεώργιος Κατσάγγελος – Georgios Katsagelos

Ο Γεώργιος Κατσάγγελος σπούδασε φωτογραφία με υποτροφία, στο BROOKLYN COLLEGE της Νέας Υόρκης. Δάσκαλος του είναι ο Walter Rosenblum. Είναι Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Εικαστικών και Εφαρμοσμένων Τεχνών της Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών του ΑΠΘ. Έχει τιμηθεί με το πρώτο Βραβείο Φωτογραφίας, Μουσείο Manege, Saint Petersburg, Ρωσία, 2010, το πρώτο βραβείο Φωτογραφίας, Μουσείο Φωτογραφίας, Τασκένδης, Μπιενάλε Ουζμπεκιστάν, 2013, βραβείο για Εθνικές και Διεθνείς Διακρίσεις Αριστείας του ΑΠΘ για την κατάκτηση του Διεθνούς Βραβείου Καλών Τεχνών από τo International Exchange Center to Kobe (Ιαπωνία), 28 Ιανουαρίου 2016. Βραβείο για Εθνικές και Διεθνείς Διακρίσεις του ΑΠΘ, 29 Ιανουαρίου 2019. Έργα του υπάρχουν στην μόνιμη συλλογή του Μουσείου Φωτογραφίας Θεσσαλονίκης, στο Brooklyn Museum of New York, Milwaukee Art Museum, στο Ikonen Museum Recklinghausen, Germany, στο Greek Cultural Center and Stockholm, Sweden και στο, Hellenic Photography Center, Athens.

Στις δικές μου αναζητήσεις το επίκεντρο κατέχει η φωτογραφία του ανθρώπου. Του ανθρώπου που δημιουργεί, που προσπαθεί να επιβιώσει, του ανθρώπου που υπολείπεται χωρίς να είναι πάντα δική του η ευθύνη. Διαπιστώνω πως βιώνω μια εφηβεία που δεν λέει να περάσει και ελπίζω ότι ο κόσμος μπορεί ή πρέπει να είναι δίκαιος χωρίς σκληρότητα και διαχωρισμούς. Στο βιβλίο «Θρησκευτικά», 1996 ο καθηγητής μου στην Αμερική Walter Rosenblum (1919-2006) συνόψισε ιδέες και πρακτικές με τρόπο που δύσκολα θα μπορούσα να αντιγράψω. «Ο Γιώργος Κατσάγγελος ήταν μαθητής μου ….ποτέ δεν αντιμετώπιζε τη ζωή με ελαφρότητα ως τουρίστας. Ποτέ δεν εκμεταλλεύτηκε αυτούς που φωτογράφιζε αποκαλύπτοντας τα προσωπικά τους σφάλματα ή τις ιδιοτροπίες τους. Αντ’ αυτού, χαιρόταν να αναδεικνύει τη δυνατότητα για ατομική αξιοπρέπεια που έβρισκε στους άλλους ανθρώπους.»

Georgios Katsagelos studied photography with scholarship, at the Brooklyn College of New York under Professor’s Walter Rosenblum supervision. He is a Professor at the Fine Art Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He served as the Director of the Cinema Museum of Thessaloniki (2002-2005). He was the Dean of the School of Fine Arts (2006–2010). He received the grand prize of photography 2009 of the Manege Museum of Saint Petersburg. He received the 1st prize of the Museum of Photography at the 2013 Biennale of Uzbekistan. He received an excellence award for his academic achievement by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2016. The same year he also awarded with a special academic award for his outstanding presence abroad. He received a prize from International Exchange Center to Kobe Japan in January 2016.

His work belongs at the permanent collections of Photography Museum of Thessaloniki, Brooklyn Museum of New York, Milwaukee Art Museum, Hellenic Photography Center, Athens, Ikonen Museum Recklinghausen, Germany, Greek Cultural Center and Stockholm, Sweden.

In my own quests, the focus is on human photography. The man who creates, trying to survive, the fallen man without his own responsibility. I realize that I’m experiencing a never-ending teenage adolescence and Ι hope that the world can or should be fair without cruelty and segregation. In the book “Religious,” 1996, my American professor Walter Rosenblum (1919-2006) summed up ideas and practices in a way that I could hardly duplicate: “Georgios Katsagelos was my disciple … he did not experience life with lightness as a tourist. He never took advantage of people he photographed revealing their personal faults or their whims. Instead, he was pleased to highlight the possibility of individual dignity he found in other people.”
